What Are Dental Veneers?
Imagine press-on nails, but for your teeth. That’s almost what dental veneers are like. Instead of a decorative acrylic resin, though, these tooth-like shells are made from a durable, pearly white porcelain. The goal of dental veneers is to conceal dental flaws behind a set of perfectly smooth, perfectly sized facades. Each of our veneers are fully customized to blend in seamlessly with each patient’s unique smile – unless there’s an endearing feature or two they want to keep, of course!
The Process of Getting Veneers
Unlike some of our other cosmetic treatments, the process of getting veneers has multiple steps that can become a bit confusing. We’ll be happy to explain the details in more depth over the phone or in person, but to help simplify the information, we’ve also included a quick overview below:
- Step 1: Consulting with Dr. Bollin about the specifics of your treatment plan.
- Step 2: Taking impressions of your teeth and color matching to get the right shade.
- Step 3: Removing a small amount of enamel to make room for the veneers.
- Step 4: Placing a set of temporary veneers that will protect your teeth.
- Step 5: Waiting for your customized veneers to be fabricated at the dental lab.
- Step 6: Returning to the office to have your permanent veneers placed.
Benefits of Veneers
The main reason patients love veneers is because of how thoroughly they can correct minor dental flaws. Deep stains, chips, cracks, and even slight crookedness or gaps can all be concealed at the same time by a set of quality veneers. And with a new, stunning smile comes a lot of confidence!
Another, less expected benefit of veneers, though, is that they can help protect teeth with weakened enamel. When enamel becomes compromised due to damage or wear, you could very well start to experience tooth sensitivity. Once the veneers are set in place, however, they act as a replacement barrier for weakened enamel, shielding the more tender parts of your teeth from external sensations. Hot and cold foods are no match for durable porcelain!
Veneers FAQs
How are veneers different from dental crowns?
Dental veneers are designed to cover only the front surfaces of your teeth and are considered an aesthetic treatment, focusing primarily on your physical appearance. Dental crowns, on the other hand, are a type of restorative treatment that fits over the entire tooth that was once damaged or decayed. Although crowns can be crafted with aesthetics in mind (i.e., metal-free restorations), most dental insurance companies will cover a portion of the cost.
How do I care for my veneers?
Customized veneers in Springdale can last 15+ years with the right level of care, so if you want your smile to last as long as possible, make sure you:
- Brush your teeth twice daily for two minutes using a soft-bristle toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste
- Floss daily before going to bed
- Rinse with antimicrobial mouthwash to rinse away remnants left behind after brushing and flossing
- Be careful about what you eat; stay away from dark-colored foods and beverages (i.e., coffee, tea, soda, soy sauce, red wine, etc.)
- Quit smoking and using tobacco products
- Drink a lot of water to encourage saliva production
- Eat calcium-rich foods, such as yogurt, cheese, milk
- Wear a mouthguard if you play sports or a nightguard if you grind your teeth
- Do not chew on pens and pencils, bite your fingernails, or open packages with your teeth
- See your dentist every six months for checkups and cleanings
What happens to the teeth under the veneers?
Veneers only cover the front surfaces of your teeth, so you need to be mindful of how well you take care of your smile. Since your natural enamel is still vulnerable to cavities and decay, brushing twice daily and flossing at least once a day will lower your risk of needing restorative care in the future.
Although Dr. Bollin must remove a small portion of tooth enamel to ensure your veneers lie flat, you do not need to worry about it increasing your risk of tooth decay. However, in addition to practicing good oral hygiene at home, you’ll also need to maintain your six-month dental checkups and cleanings with our office and adopt a healthy diet to reduce stains and the risk of gum disease.
How much do porcelain veneers cost?
Veneers are not a one-size-fits-all form of cosmetic treatment. As fully customized restorations, they are designed based on each patient’s needs. As a result, their cost varies case by case. To determine how much you can expect to spend on your new smile, you must meet with Dr. Bollin to discuss your treatment. This requires an evaluation of your oral health and a determination of whether you need additional dental care before receiving your new veneers. Also, how many of these custom sheaths you receive will impact the total cost of your care.
Since most dental insurance companies do not offer coverage for veneers, you will need to inquire about other ways you can pay for your cosmetic treatment. This may include applying for flexible financing through CareCredit or enrolling in our in-house membership plan.
