Patient relaxing at home after wisdom tooth extraction

For many, getting wisdom teeth taken out is a rite of passage. The procedure is incredibly common, but the recovery often feels like uncharted territory. There are a hundred questions that can go through your head like, what should you expect in the days following surgery? How long until you’re back to normal? And what can you do to make recovery easier? Continue reading to take a closer look at some timelines and tips that will help you navigate your recovery after wisdom tooth extraction.

The First 24 Hours

Right after surgery, you’ll likely feel numb or groggy from anesthesia. Swelling and mild bleeding are normal at this stage as the extraction sites are fresh. Your dentist will provide gauze to bite down on and instructions for managing pain.

At this point, all you need to worry about is rest. So, skip strenuous activity, avoid hot or spicy foods, and keep your head elevated while lying down.

Days 2 to 3

Swelling usually peaks within 48 to 72 hours. Ice packs are your best friend during this stage, so apply them regularly in short intervals to reduce discomfort. For meals, plan your menu around soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, and applesauce.

If you typically drink with a straw, you’ll need to avoid doing so for a while. This is because the suction can dislodge the blood clot around your extraction sites, causing a painful complication called dry socket.

Days 4 to 7

By the end of the first week, swelling and discomfort should begin to taper off. Most people return to light daily activities within this timeframe. However, you may still need to avoid crunchy or spicy foods that could irritate the healing sites. Keep brushing and flossing carefully but steer clear of the extraction area. Gentle saltwater rinses help keep your mouth clean.

Weeks 2 to 4

By the second week, many patients feel nearly back to normal. There may be some lingering tenderness, but significant pain should be gone. Full gum healing can take up to a month, and bone tissue may continue repairing itself for several months. However, as long as you follow aftercare instructions, complications are rare.

Recovery Tips for Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Recovery is the most difficult part of wisdom tooth extraction, so if you want to pass through yours with flying colors, try:

  • Resting with your head elevated during the first few days.
  • Sticking to soft, cool, and nutrient-rich foods.
  • Using over-the-counter or prescribed pain relievers as directed.
  • Avoiding alcohol, smoking, vaping, and vigorous rinsing.
  • Contacting your dentist right away if there’s any intense pain.

With this guide in hand, you’ll recover faster and be more comfortable at every stage of your recovery after wisdom tooth extraction. So, while it may seem daunting, you’ll be back to yourself in no time.
