If you’ve been considering getting veneers but are worried about them feeling unnatural or uncomfortable, the good news is that once they’re in place, you likely won’t remember they’re there. Here’s a closer look at the types of problems these incredible restorations can correct, and what you can expect to feel during and after your procedure!
What are Veneers?
Veneers are thin porcelain shells that fit over your existing teeth to change their shape, size, color, and even spacing. In fact, they’re often affectionately referred to as “instant orthodontics” because the entire treatment can be completed in as little as two appointments!
What Happens During a Veneers Procedure?
Your dentist will begin your veneer treatment by first numbing your mouth. This is to ensure you remain comfortable, because your teeth will need to be reshaped to accommodate the prosthetics.
Next, impressions will be made of your teeth so your veneers can be customized to fit them perfectly. You will be fitted with temporary prosthetics to wear until the permanent ones have been created at the dental lab. Typically, this takes about two weeks. During that time, it is possible to experience some temporary sensitivity when eating hot or cold foods, but this should stop once the permanent veneers are in place.
When ready, you will return to your dentist’s office to have the temporary veneers removed and the permanent ones attached. This should not hurt and requires no down time following your procedure. In fact, you should be able to begin showing off and using your gorgeous new smile immediately!
What Will My Veneers Feel Like?
Once you have your permanent veneers placed, your mouth should not feel any different. Although it is possible to experience some mild sensitivity at first, this typically clears up within a few days. You may also have some trouble speaking clearly at first, but with practice your speech should return to normal. If it does not, contact your dentist, as you may need to have the porcelain filed down to make it easier for your tongue to move freely around your teeth.
Remember, veneers have the incredible ability to transform your smile in as little as two dental appointments. The great news is that getting them is an extremely comfortable process, and once they’re in place you can expect to enjoy a beautiful, pain free smile for up to 20 years!
